James O. King posted Pls Read This From A Patriotic Nigerian: Na-Allah Mohammed Zagga wrote: How Boko Haram Is Winning the Media War in Nigeria. It was not for nothing that the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said that the terrorists should be starved of the oxygen of publicity. Sadly, wittingly or unwittingly, the Nigerian press appear to be playing into the propaganda hands of the Boko Haram terrorists. Consider these newspaper headlines today: Emir flees as Boko Haram hits Defence Chiefs town. - The Nation newspaper, Wednesday, September 10, 2014. Another headlines screams: 20 Police officers still missing after Boko Haram Attack.-The Guardian Wednesday, September 10, 2014. Are these front page screaming headlines not a good public relations for the terrorists? I cant imagine a U.S. newspaper saying: American troops beat a humiliating retreat in the face of ISIS superior firepower. Although the Nation newspaper reported that our troops have retaken Bazza and Bama, the story was printed almost inconspicuouslyunder its screaming headlines which gives prominence to the terrorists successes. Honestly, we should not be neutral between good and evil; between cruelty and compassion, and between justice and injustice. In Pakistan, the government introduced a code of conduct for media practitioners which requires them never to glorify terrorism. While maintaining their independence, media practitioners should draw a line somewhere. Our troops have recorded many successes against Boko Haram, but such successes appear to be disproportionately reported. Things should not be this way. Giving undue and undeserving headlines to terrorists at the expense of our security personnel is disturbing.
