January 16, 2015 Devotion: Teach how to pray Part 2 of 5 In yesterday’s devotion, we learned from Jesus’s teaching how to approach God in prayer. In that we should see God as a Father who is unlike our earthly fathers, in that He is absolutely Holy, having no imperfections or weaknesses, who remains true to his promises. In other words we can have confidence when we approach God in prayer. Today we will look at Jesus’s second sentence in Luke 11:2b with a cross reference to Matthew 6:10. In Luke’s gospel, Jesus said, “Your kingdom come” but in Matthew’s gospel, Matthew added “your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” This gives us a fuller understanding as to what is being said in Luke’s gospel. Therefore, in our approach to prayer from Jesus’s perspective, our primary focus should not be ourselves, but that God’s will be carried out in the realm of the earth as it is being carried out in heaven. This includes our individual lives, consequently when we pray, we need to examine our hearts and ask ourselves, “Am I living according to the will of God? Is there anything in my life that does not reflect God’s will? Now you may ask, how do I know what God’s will is? Well, Jesus gave one example (there are many other examples in the bible), that is, The Kingdom of God to be visibly present in this earth. In short, God’s will is being perfectly carried out in heaven, there is harmony in heaven, and worship to God is 24/7 without any competing interest. Moreover, there are no deaths, tears, sicknesses, or poverty (Rev. 21:4), rather there is absolute righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17), that is what God desires to be done in the earth, but that will only become a reality when we earnestly pray each day for His Kingdom to come and to live it out in our daily lives by how we treat each other, which will be the focus on Monday.
