January 6. Earl Scruggs was born in Flint Hill, North Carolina, on this date in 1924. First with Bill Monroes Bluegrass Boys, then in tandem with Lester Flatt, Earls three-finger Scruggs style banjo picking became one of THE defining sounds of bluegrass music. Aside from his musical accomplishments, Earl was one of the very few clountry or bluegrass musicians to take a stand against the Viet Nam war.
