January is awareness month for esophageal atresia. 1 in 4,000 - TopicsExpress

January is awareness month for esophageal atresia. 1 in 4,000 babies are born with this birth defect. The esophagus doesnt grow properly. For my son Dylan, his upper esophagus stopped in a blind pouch and the lower esophagus attached itself to his trachea. There was no connection to his stomach and he could not eat or swallow. He had surgery at 2 days old to connect the two ends together so he could eat. Feeding did not go well after surgery and he had to have a feeding tube placed in his tiny tummy. Hes had 3 surgeries in all with numerous hospital visits and procedures. Today at 8 years old Im happy and grateful to report he no longer has a feeding tube and is eating 100% orally! Hes come a long way and he is my hero! Some babies dont survive as you will see in the video. Please take a moment to watch this video in honor of these amazing kids. Dylan is included in the video too!
