Jesus does not wish me to reclaim what belongs to me. This ought - TopicsExpress

Jesus does not wish me to reclaim what belongs to me. This ought to appear quite natural, since in reality I own nothing, and ought to rejoice when an occasion brings home to me poverty to which I am solemnly vowed. Formerly I used to think myself detached from everything, but since the Lords words have become clear to me, I see how imperfect I am. When starting to paint, for instance, if I happen to find the brushes in confusion, if a ruler or a penknife is missing, I am sorely tempted to lose patience, and have strongly to resist the impulse to demand, and sharply demand, the articles I want. I may, of course, ask for them, and if I do so humbly, I am not disobeying the Lords command. On the contrary, I am like the poor who hold out their hands for the necessaries of life and are not surprised if they are not refused, because no one owes them anything. The truly poor in spirit ask with detachment for what is really needful; not only they are refused, but an attempt is made to deprive them of what they possess already. Yet they follow the Lords advice; If any man takes away your coat, let your cloak go also (Matthew 5:40).
