Jewell Jean Juli Busken Birth: Oct. 24, 1975 Benton Saline County Arkansas, USA Death: Dec. 20, 1996 Norman Cleveland County Oklahoma, USA An aspiring ballerina from Benton, Arkansas, Jewell graduated from Benton High School in 1993, then went to study ballet at the University of Oklahoma College of Fine Arts. She was a bright, eager dance student; she loved the extensive practice and demands for precision that went with ballet dancing. She gave her grandest performance in Swan Lake, displaying the aptitude and pleasure she had always taken in her field of choice, on December 13, 1996. Her graduation from OU was at hand, and she would have returned home to Benton and gone on to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville to pursue a masters teaching program to become a ballet teacher and open a dance studio. Jewell was a victim of homicide. A young life taken far too soon. Her grave is within 100 feet of the grave of Wiley Post, famous Oklahoma aviator. Juli Busken, a 21-year-old University of Oklahoma dance major, was abducted, forced into her car, raped and murdered in 1996. Busken’s mother and father arrived that evening to help Juli move back to her hometown of Benton, Arkansas only to hear that her body had been found in a nearby lake. Eight years later, the national CODIS database matched the semen found on Busken’s leotards to Anthony Sanchez, who had recently been charged with rape and second-degree burglary in Cleveland County. In 2006, Sanchez was convicted for the first-degree murder, rape and sodomy of Juli Busken. After almost nine hours of deliberations, jurors sentenced him to the death penalty.
