Jimmy Clem In the mid 80’s I was stationed in Shreveport, LA and had become pretty good friends with Rick Reeves over at Happy Valley and with JD Bonner at Busy B Ranch. At the time JD had the Busy B Pedro bull and he was fairly new, he was just getting his first set of calves from him. Diane and I were up there visiting one day and Jimmy Clem just happened to be there. I don’t know if JD had bought some Avispa semen or traded some Pedro semen for it, I know he had bred the bull just a bit though. Jimmy was a big man with a strong voice, there was once an article on him and his acting in the Brahman Journal. He was very down to Earth and likable also. I immediately took a liking to him. He had the Avispa bull that he had imported from Mexico. Burt can tell more about the bull and the import than I ever could, but he was a big framed, solid black, well featured Indu bull. We were all sitting in JD’s office talking and I was curious about the name Avispa. I ask Jimmy about it and he said it was Spanish for Wasp or Black Wasp, I think it was Black Wasp. Then he leans back in his chair and ask if I knew why he would name the bull Avispa. Of course I didn’t. He sort of laughed and said “because I’m gonna sting somebody’s ass with him”. That was the only time I got to meet Jimmy. He was just another down to Earth, honest, breeder like so many before and since who have made this breed so great. Sort of sad that there is so little of those old Indu and Gyr genetics left in the US, I wasn’t a big fan of the Gyr because of the udders in general, but I always felt that both bloodlines had a lot to offer. Burt, please feel free to jump in here and add anything on Jimmy, Avispa, and any of those other real good bulls he had.
