Joe’s Sunday Sermon (8/4/2013) Greetings believers and non-believers it is Sunday, so time for more reality. I am reading a book about the neuroscience of belief. I am always perplexed at how otherwise intelligent people can fall for the ignorance, the sheer madness that is religion and blind faith. It appears that there is an evolutionary and biologically based reason. The human brain will grasp onto these beliefs in many people and will work to justify those beliefs with virtual disregard of any facts contrary to that belief. In other words many of you are simply genetically programmed to remain ignorant of the truth in order to favor your belief. Now, while this is an explanation, it is certainly NOT an excuse. We are modern humans and we are learning and discovering at a rate that early man could never have dreamed of. Clinging to an ignorant Bronze Age fable that is filled with bigotry, misogyny, murder, cruelty, genocide and gross terror is beyond any justification. You will no doubt claim that it also contains messages of love and peace, well sure it is! Does that mean it is worth the pain? No. Does that mean it is worth the abuses of others and the denial of human rights? No. Can we have love and peace without gods? Yes. There ARE predominantly secular countries on this planet that thrive and are peaceful. The citizens of these countries do not rape, rob and pillage and these countries by the way, have a lower crime rate than here in the oh so pious USA. That is a statistical fact. When two people disagree about something, the way to settle the argument is for both sides to present evidence. I have evidence of the success of science and the scientific method. I have evidence of evolution (tons of it) and I have evidence that one can love and raise children without imaginary friends and Bronze Age brutality. You have no credible evidence for god. There is none. To say that there is makes you either ignorant or a liar. Every credible theological scholar that has done a public debate that has been recorded on video admits this freely and falls back to “it is a matter of faith” – well in an argument on any other topic that response loses. Only in religion does that seem to be acceptable, ignorance is permitted, even advocated. This should bother you. Any organization, belief system, company or paradigm that rewards or embraces ignorance is simply not worthy of my allegiance. There is as much evidence for gods as there is for werewolves, unicorns, smurfs or fairies. Yet if you believed in those mythical characters it is unlikely you would deny gay people the right to love each other. You would not support a textbook that sanctions slavery, child abuse and murder, animal sacrifice and a host of other utterly ignorant and morally disgusting acts. We are intelligent enough in this age to distinguish what practices (based upon evidence) is better or worse to facilitate human happiness and social bliss. We no longer need a Bronze Age horror story or book of terrors such as the Bible to do this for us. Yes, there may have been a need for this ignorance in the absence of true knowledge, but not any longer. So, until next week – Keep loving, learning - resist hate and ignorance.
