July 28, 1907 LODD Driver Joseph Hisky, assigned to Steamer Company 5, was injured while fighting a fire at Front Street and Union Avenue at 1225 IS. The 7 story warehouse contained the Memphis Cold Storage, the Oliver-Finnie Grocer Company, the Memphis Paper Company, and storage space of the Cudahy Packing Company. An adjoining building belonging to the Behr and Cole Grocery Company was heavily damaged. Hisky was injured in the early stages of the fire, when he was running in an alley in the darkness and fell through a grating some 22 feet into an excavation below the buildings. He was taken to City Hospital. At 1:55AM a wall collapsed, severely injuring Fireman William Kelly of Steamer Company 5 and at 2:45 AM Lt. John Curry of Steamer Company 9 was injured by a different falling wall. Joseph Hisky, 34 died at the Hospital. He had been with the department for over four years. He was married and the father of five children. This fire destroyed 2 buildings and caused a $500,000.00 loss. July 28, 1937 03:30 Pm, 81 Jefferson Ave, Weakley Hotel, 4 story building with a working fire confined to the basement, 15 occupants were rescued down ladders, 2nd Alarm 3:33 PM and 3rd Alarm at 03:35 PM.
