"July was a game-changing month for the war, with some of the bloodiest days resulting in Union soldiers winning vital battles at Gettysburg and Vicksburg. It all led up to the Battle of Battery Wagner on July 18, wherein the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment charged Confederate troops on Morris Island, hoping to eventually get to Charleston. The 54th Infantry, notably comprising free African Americans, never succeeded at capturing Fort Wagner, but they did inspire more than 180,000 additional African Americans to volunteer to fight for the Union. Sound familiar? Perhaps you’ve seen Glory, the 1989 Academy Award-winning movie, starring Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, and Matthew Broderick, which is based on the Battle of Battery Wagner."
