June 23 – [A] I was at the church yesterday, setting up the chairs and tables for worship and to do some reading in the peace and quiet environment. I was startled by the urgent knocking on the front doors. When I checked on the source, I saw an elderly man leaning against his cane. When I opened the door, he asked to see the Pastor. When I explained that the Pastor was not in and that I was alone, he showed me his driver’s license and informed me that he was from Edgewood, a town on the other side of the Sandia Mountains, that he was in town to care for his son who had his foot amputated as a result of diabetes and that he needed some gasoline to drive home. Since there are a number of professional panhandlers who prey on the conscious of Christians for drug and booze money, I was reluctant to give him cash. I prayed to God for discernment and his answer appeared in my mind: give him what he asked for. I explained to the gentleman that I could not give him cash but if he truly needed gas, I will take him to the nearest gas station and give him what he needed. He followed me to the Smith’s gas station and I paid over forty dollars to fill his tank. I thank God that I could honestly be of service to my fellow human being, just like the Good Samaritan in the parable that Jesus told his disciples.
