Junior Diabetes Cup..............Papendal National Sports Centre near Arnham in the Netherlands. The event was sponsored by Medtronic though the Junior Diabetic Research Foundation (JDRF) to raise awareness of diabetes. 12 countries took part with 132 players participating, all of who were type 1 diabetic and therefore insulin dependant. The UK team was in group B and played 5 group games before playing Russia from group A to determine their final tournament placing. For each game as the teams came onto the pitch the National flags were carried by the captain, and on the finals day the national anthems were played before each game commenced. The UKs first game was against the Netherlands who went on to win the tournament, with other teams in the group consisting of Poland, Spain, Belgium and Italy. The UK drew 1 game and won their last 2 games. The UK was 9th place and were the recipients of the fair play award with Spain receiving the diversity award. It was a fantastic experience for Sam and he thoroughly enjoyed it. The welcome night was the night the group draw was made and a number of sporting stars and officials made the evening a huge success.
