Just finished reading an article where part of a student body of a high school near Philadelphia want to change their schools mascot from Redskins to something else that hasnt been determined yet. Basically they just want to ban the mascot. IMO, I am done with all of the political correctness. It is controlling our way of life to the point, you cant say anything without someone taking offense to it. Wont be long before saying Happy Birthday or Good Morning will be offensive. The madness needs to end. I am NOT condoning the actions and/or the nick names used for sports teams, but it seems interesting how most of these names have been around for a very long time and now; say for the past 10 years; are offensive. Where were these people when the names were first being used, or maybe within the first 20 years of its established use? The timing of all of these offensive names accusations is very interesting; to me anyways. I am sure many of you will agree that some of these names are offensive, maybe I should say names like the Bears or the 49ers or the Indians or the Cowboys are offensive to me and maybe I should file a lawsuit asking those names be changed. All of these names were never meant to be used in an offensive manner to anyone, and still arent. In fact, when the teams are talked about, the name isnt used in an offensive manner by anyone. Maybe its just me, but if a sports reporter is talking about a team and uses their nick name, I know he/she is talking about the team and not the people who supposedly find the name offensive to them. Truth be told, I dont think the N-word should be offensive, for the simple fact that Black Americans still use the word to address each other, thus claiming its okay for them to say it. To me thats racist. If you are a certain race and you are going to say its okay for your race to say that word, then its okay for everyone else to say it as well, after all its all about equality. Otherwise, if you find it offensive then its offensive to EVERYONE, not just so your race can use the word exclusively. In the Navy and in the fire service, I was trained that if you are going to bring up a problem, you better have a solution, so, I mentioned a problem; people finding certain mascots and/or team names offensive. Heres my solution to the problem, all sporting teams; regardless of sporting level; should drop their team names and mascots and should only be known by the school or city they represent or play in. For the teams that share a city name, they should change that name to identify the city area their stadium or playing venue is located. If that isnt possible, then identify themselves with the geographical location, such as North Los Angeles/South Los Angeles. With this solution, no one will ever have to worry about being offended, other than how their team plays.
