Just wanted to take a minute to address my professors of this - TopicsExpress

Just wanted to take a minute to address my professors of this year. We have paid an exorbitant amount of money to attend a school which features up to date and convenient forms of media to disperse information. Still, in light of this there are professors using handouts and hundreds of photocopies of articles and the like and NOT using the email addresses supplied and blackboard web page to properly inform their students. I have 5 courses and only 2 of those professors are using blackboard, one of which is still handing out photocopies of the documents he sends us, what am I paying for? Do I even need to point out the direct irony involved in taking a majority of courses (4 of 5) that are only required of students in my major, Environmental Studies? I cant even begin to summarize the frustration I have to professors thinking it is acceptable to have a secretary or co-worker put a note on the classroom door to inform us that class is cancelled. POST IT ONLINE. Im on my way to taking my 4th year courses and there is no sign of the slightest bit of an upcoming direction that will prepare me for a career of my choosing. I withdrew from a course this semester where in the opening day the professor told us we are all failures as people as a result of our parents inability to teach the basic necessities to succeed in life, and then insulted us for attending school only for the sake of getting a job instead of wanting to learn. Ive been a post secondary student for almost 10 years now, and I cannot believe how under prepared I am to enter the work force, and its directly caused by the complete inability of these bleeding heart liberal english professors and the snot nosed right wing economic professors taking the time out of each and every class to point out how wrong the other side is, and then going right back to their day jobs the minute they leave class, with the unbelievable amount of arrogance emanating from them that they feel they earn their time away from class, that we need to be in a deathly situation to get enough sympathy for them to even read and respond to our emails. I have expressed my concerns for my lack of interest in class semester after semester, and I have readily forked over scholarships, my parents hard earned dollars, and now my own loans and money to get just one professor who can actually inspire AND prepare me to move towards a career where I can support a family and give those that I love at the very least the things they deserve in return for all theyve done for me, let alone the gifts and support I would like to give them beyond that. Im not writing this because I want someone to look at my words and feel like Ive struck a nerve about questioning the efforts of professors to motivate students or that they dont deserve their free time. I have a large number of friends who have gone through education degrees, and some who are now college and university professors, and I know their work is overwhelming. Im writing this because of a genuine frustration with their inability to give us even the slightest bit of hope that their words are actually contributing towards anything constructive in our future beyond facts and numbers. I dont need inspiration from the desolate marsh lands of Nova Scotia or an annual reminder that acid rain is an issue in the southern part of the province, I dont need to be reminded of how all of my friends who are trying to feed their families are destroying the ecosystem by working in the tar sands, I need you to tell me how I can step out the door and make one small contribution each day to reclaiming the things that my friends dont have the fortune of being able to save, in an employed setting with my future dependents in mind. We literally had a class today where the professor told us the most important step in creating a policy to protect watersheds was not only to identify the problem, but to include a real potential solution in the proposed policy, and then gave us no explanation as to how to create a successful solution in a policy. I cant listen to another professor discuss the overwhelming hypocrisy of humanity and then continue to leave me unprepared for a future which I chose in order to contribute something positive to society. DISCLAIMER: Please do not treat this as an open debate. This is my opinion on a subject I have been a part of for almost 1/3 of my life, and quite frankly I dont need to be convinced otherwise that professors are doing a good job of preparing me, or that Im looking at it the wrong way. If you are satisfied with your educational career, I am both envious and overjoyed for you, but there is an incredible number of people just like me who could not feel more lost within a system that caters to our tuition fees and government loans while it ignores our intention to shape ourselves into better people.
