KIO-Burmese government meeting concludes with agreement to prepare for political dialogue By KLN Thursday, Oct 10, 2013 General Sumlut Gun Maw and Lt. Gen Myint Soe exchange signed agreement After three days of open and closed doors negotiations, KIO and Burmese government reached another seven-point agreement Thursday to prepare for political dialogue. The meeting that began Tuesday morning ended Thursday afternoon without concrete agreement for a ceasefire. The two sides agree to continue discussions on Nationwide Ceasefire Accord and hold an ethnic armed groups conference, to continue negotiations on armed conflict reduction, to begin a pilot project in four villages for IDPs to return home and restore their livelihood, to establish a joint monitoring committee to prevent further armed conflicts and cessation of hostilities, to conduct KIO-public consultation after negotiation with authorities concerned, to continue to communicate for future dialogues by technical teams from both sides. An informed source told KLN that Burmese government’s delegation, as expected, pressed hard for a ceasefire agreement. KIO, with its past experiences and public support for its stand, instead signed an agreement that falls short of a ceasefire and emphasizes on reduction of armed encounters. According to the agreement, KIO will host an ethnic armed groups conference and discuss on issues such as government’s proposed nationwide ceasefire accord and prepare for political dialogue. A joint monitoring committee will be set up to prevent further armed conflicts and for cessation of hostilities. The two sides also agree on an operational plan based on joint monitoring committee structure, 5 basic principles and 18 rules. kachinlandnews/?p=23823
