KIRORI MAL PRINCIPAL GOES MISSING, DU ASSURES ADMISSION IN ECA QUOTA Delhi University administration had to step in to assure admission to 60 sports and extracurricular activity (ECA) candidates after Kirori Mal College principal went ‘missing’ on Thursday. In a notification issued last month, the university had asked colleges to finish admission before July 31. The admission under the sports and ECA quota had been earlier been put on hold following a standoff between the officiating principal S P Gupta and the special admission committee. Sources in the college administration say Gupta suspected foul play in the way selections were made. “The special admission committee had allocated courses to the selected candidates nearly two weeks ago,” said Pramod Shastri, an associate professor of physical education, alleging the principal had withheld admissions. But following mounting pressure from teachers and protesters, which included students and their parents, the principal on Wednesday evening had signed a letter conceding to give admission to selected applicants. “Admission of all 60 candidates is to be proceeded with immediate effect and no later than July 31, 2014,” said a notice signed by the college principal, approving names of students recommended by the special admission committee. The college on its website on Thursday morning, however, posted a list of 21 candidates. But the principal was apparently not available to sign the forms, another step in the admission process. “Even though my name was there in the second list which had 21 names, the principal wasn’t there to sign the admission form,” one of the candidates said. With the support of student groups, the candidates protested outside the Vice Chancellor’s office demanding intervention. “The Dean of Students’ Welfare came out and announced that he will handle the admission tomorrow morning at 9 am, regardless of the principal’s absence,” told Iyce Malhotra, who is seeking admission under ECA quota. According to the Delhi University guidelines, the colleges are allowed to admit up to 5 per cent of students on sports or extracurricular basis. Early this month, Hindu College had decided not to admit students, under the ECA quota arguing that admission process through is fraught with malpractices.
