KNSG OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS TO 300 STUDENTS FOR MEDICAL TRAINING OVERSEAS Kano government has given overseas scholarships in the tune of N2.7 billion to 300 secondary school leavers from the state to study medicine and allied courses. Under the scheme, 100 female students were selected to specialize in Gynecology, 100 males and females to study Medicine and 100 males and females to study Pharmaceutical Sciences. Admission was obtained for them in different universities in Sudan, Egypt, Uganda, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and India. Announcing this during the presentation of letters of sponsorship to beneficiaries of the scheme at Africa House, Government House, Kano, the state governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso said: “Our vision for sponsoring these students to study in these critical areas of need is to bridge the gap existing in our healthcare institutions and healthcare delivery system”. To achieve this, he stated, the only option for the government is to seek admission for the students abroad, in light of the limited spaces available in local universities, adding that the move will also broaden the cultural and intellectual horizon of the students. He however advised the local universities to review their admission procedures so as to provide more spaces to accommodate the teeming students, stressing the need for the institutions to be steadfast in ensuring that doctors and other medical professionals in the country are well trained. Governor Kwankwaso, recalled that the state government has spent billions of Naira to sponsor about 1,600 students to pursue various professional courses aboard, as part of efforts to revolutionize the education sector in the state, pointing out that this was achieved through prudent management of public resources. Turning to the 300 students going aboard for studies, the governor charged them to be good ambassadors of Nigeria and of Kwankwasiyya, pointing out that their conduct and academic performance will be monitored, to ensure that the investment in the future of Kano is not squandered. In his speech, the special guest of honour and Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro described Governor Kwankwaso has a pacesetter, whose commitment to the development of Kano is unrivalled. Others who spoke during the occasion including the outgoing EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. David Mcrea, representative of the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Ram V., the Registrar, Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria, Mrs. Gloria Ebumere and the Executive Secretary, Christian Pilgrims Commission of Nigeria, Mr. John K. Okpara praised Kwankwaso for making Kano a model of sustainable development in Nigeria. In their separate remarks, representatives of the beneficiaries, Mahmud Khalid, Abdallah Garba Usman and Rabi’ah Ahmad Baffa expressed appreciation to the government of Kano state for sponsoring their education and promised to do the nation proud, in learning and moral fiber.
