#KashmirFloods update: Providing clean water supply in the aftermath of the floods has been a priority for our teams working in Jammu & Kashmir. In Srinagar city, we have installed five community water filters and three water tanks in the camps. Oxfam has been distributing chlorine tablets in camps and neighbourhoods (already 140,000 tablets are distributed). Water storage tanks in two major hospitals, which were submerged, were disinfected. Oxfam is also coordinating with municipality for debris cleaning and carcass disposals from the habitation areas. We are also helping with the cleaning of the Lasjan area – an area that does not come under the municipality and is relatively poor. We have also tested the supplied and stored water samples in the area for chlorine content, to decide on distribution of chlorine tablets to the communities for household water treatment. In South Kashmir, we are working in 15 affected villages in Anantnag, Pulwama and Kulgam districts. We have distributed chlorine tablets to 1,000 households in the two worst hit villages in Anantnag district. The target population in these two villages is 900 households. A one-day training was organised for ten volunteers on water chlorination in Anantnag. These volunteers will in turn orient the people how to use the chlorine tablets. Temporary toilet slabs have arrived in Anantnag from Srinagar. A plan for transitional toilets considering winter-appropriate structural solutions has also been finalised.
