Kayode Odewade > Family and Marital Affairs SOCIOLOGICAL MEANING OF FAMILY: According to the Encyclopedia of Siciology- FAMILY is a set of persons related to each other by blood, marriage, or adoption who constitute a social system. Membership in a family is determined by a combination of biological and cultural criteria, they may vary considerably from culture to culture. Major Family Types: The Nuclear Family (Parents and Children) is the smallest family type; and is the building block for all other family types. The Extended Family involves two or more Nuclear Families and three or more Generations, generally living together. The Conjugal Family is the family in which the primary emphasis is placed upon the husband/wife relationships rather than upon blood relationships. The Conjugal Family centres around the Parents and their children. This type of family generally does not form an extended family and is usually considered as synonymous with the Nuclear Family. The Conjugal Family may be annihilated through divorce and may lack some of the security and stability of some of the larger family types. In a Consanguine family the primary emphasis is upon the blood relationships of parents and children, or brothers and sisters rather than upon the Marital relationships of Husband and Wife. The Consanguine Family normally forms an Extended Family. With this type of Family, the most important obligation is to parent from child rather than from spouse to spouse.
