Kelapa Bakar was featured in the Malaysian Television few years back. It became known to the attention of the public. Kelapa Bakar literally means “Burnt Coconut”. I am not sure of their process, but accordingly, they are burning the coconut inside a container drum. The inside color underneath its flesh changed a bit into greyish and purplish. Aside from kelapa bakar they are also serving another kind made of coconut, like the kelapa puding, the coconut puding and kelapa sejuk, the cold coconut. The lokan bakar or lokan panggang is also served. Lokan is a sort of shell; I don’t know its name in English. The stalls are found along the Sulaman Road, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. The makers are mostly of Bajau descent and some Kagayan and Suluk as well as Dusun. It actually became one of the tourist attractions in the city. The locals also loved to eat here. There is a need for the city council or any government agency to improve the place as this became the tourist destinations. And putting this in the list of tourist attractions is recommended. Somehow this help locals a lot of their small scale livelihood. Layag Sug!
