★ Know your strength, unlock your true potential If you remember we had discussed in one of our earlier messages the power of strength. By strength we mean both body and mind. Now, I would like to delve a little deeper into this topic to help you understand your strength. The rat race begins as soon as a soul enters the mortal world. Parents and doctors start monitoring if the baby is achieving all milestones at the appropriate time or not. Some parents begin to panic when their second child doesn’t start talking around the same age that their first child did. Once in school the pressure of earning an A+ is thrust on the child. Many a time a child is compared to his or her siblings or classmates and ridiculed for not performing as good as them. In this way, the pressure to achieve keeps building on an individual until he breathes his very last breath. In this melee, the individual jumps into the rat race without much thought, without understanding his strength! And this is the beginning of more pressure, stress and despair. Once upon a time a man happened to pass by some elephants that were tied to a pole with the help of a thin rope. He was quite bemused at the sight of such huge animals being bound by a single flimsy rope. He spotted the animal’s trainer nearby and walked over to him and asked, “I can clearly see that even a tiny creature can break that rope and escape. Why aren’t these elephants even attempting to break away?” The trainer replied, “You see, when they were young they were tied with the same rope which was good enough to hold them back at that time as they were small and comparatively weak. As they grew they began to believe that the rope can still hold them and hence they didn’t even try to break away.” This is exactly what happens with us too. As a child if we are conditioned to believe that we don’t possess certain ability or we can’t perform a particular feat, we stop trying even after we grow up, thereby failing to recognize our own strength. We all know that in this world “Change is a constant.” This holds true even for humans who keep changing through different phases of their lives. If we understand this concept, then we will appreciate the fact that our strengths too can change, over a period of time. However we first need to know where our strength lies? Then, focus on those activities that bring out the best of our core strength and capability. Having done that we should move on to the next step; reassess or re-evaluate our strength from time to time. As we age, our experience in a particular field will serve to become our newly achieved strength; one which we didn’t possess when we had started 30 years ago. Hence it is vital to re-examine our core strengths from time to time and utilize it correctly. Remember, successful people are those who focus on their strengths and work around their weaknesses.
