Knox posts: 10 Jan 1964 - in what is surely one of those most often recalled episodes of flying, B-52H 61-023, flown by Boeing test pilot Charles F. (“Chuck”) Fisher & his crew out of Wichita encountered near simultaneous mountain wave down draft & side currents resulting in the structural failure of virtually all of her vertical fin. Through some VERY high quality flying (including lowering her gear to provide some yaw), Chuck was able to recover the aircraft at Blythville AFB. Repaired & returned to service, 1023 flew on until retired in 2008.
