#LA #LosAngeles Veteran & Family Stand Down Date/Time Date(s) - December 20, 2014 - December 22, 2014 All Day Location Los Angeles Convention Center Categories Inglewood Why Los Angeles? Although the numbers have decreased since U.S.VETS opened its doors in 1993, Los Angeles still has the largest population of homeless military veterans in the nation with the latest homeless count estimating more than 6,300 veterans living on the streets. Los Angeles County remains the epicenter of homelessness in the U.S. Homeless vets account for nearly 20% of the people living on the streets and in shelters in Los Angeles. For a low-income veteran and family, attaining and maintaining affordable, stable housing is no easy achievement in Los Angeles. The overall cost of living in LA is 36% above the national average, with housing costs among the top ten most expensive in the nation. What is the goal? President Obama and the Department of Veteran Affairs set a national goal of ending veteran homelessness by 2015. In July, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti signed on to the President’s Challenge and committed to ending veteran homelessness by 2015. As the second largest U.S. city, Los Angeles is a leader in solving community issues and with the Mayor and City Council’s backing, the Stand Down will be an invaluable tool in reaching this important goal. The proposed Los Angeles Veteran & Families Stand Down will serve 2500 homeless and at-risk veterans and families in the first year and up to 5000 in the second year as LA becomes the first major American city to meet the President’s Challenge of ending homelessness among veterans by the end of 2015. STAND DOWN INNOVATION The first annual Los Angeles Veteran & Families Stand Down will be the largest ever held in the United States. This three-day event is unique amongst the many Stand Downs conducted nation-wide as it will be held inside the Los Angeles Convention Center. Its location, size and scope will be a lightning rod for national attention to the homeless veteran issue. It will operate as a dual Stand Down event for male veterans and female veterans and families. Services will be targeted to serve all populations. Technology will be implemented to streamline the registration and data collection process. All service providers will agree to work with a coordinated entry system that fast-tracks veterans and families into housing or treatment. usvetsinc.org/information-center/calendar/events/los-angeles-veteran-family-stand-down/
