LAI HARAOBA SEASON: CHAKPA PHAYENG VILLAGE. Ehool films followed the annual Lai Haraoba festival in the Chakpa Phayeng village of Manipur state, India. We were fortunate enough and lucky to stay at village leaders home for the whole 10 day festival. This short video clip is a (5:20 minute) sample taken from the work in progress:(working title) Phayeng Village Lai Haraoba Festival, and is an excerpt from day 5 of Ehool Films recording. The sequence was captured in the late afternoon during a ritual called Lai Keithel Kaba (Attending the Divine Marketplace). In the clip is a rare scene of trance possession, where a female Amaibi (ritual conductor) goes into a spontaneous trance and delivers an oracle/prophecy to village. The scene is shown here at this time out of context and is part of a larger work on the whole Lai Haraoba festival, however it is powerful in its own right, and shows some of the field recording I captured for this project.
