LOGGERHEAD RELEASE SCHEDULED FOR WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22, AT 8:30 AM IN INDIALANTIC A female loggerhead sea turtle, approximately 165 pounds, will be released by SeaWorld on Wednesday, January 22 at 8:30 AM, in Indialantic, on the beach east of the boardwalk. This location is on the beach directly behind the Sea Turtle Preservation Societys office at 111 S. Miramar Avenue, Indialantic for those of you unfamiliar with the area. If you plan to attend, please be prompt because SeaWorld explained that “The air temp will be a little cool so we may have time for a few quick pictures on the beach but we probably will want to get it to the water rather quickly once it is out of the vehicle.” They also told us that they will notify us if there is a delay in their arrival. Please check this facebook page to monitor any changes until the scheduled date and time. This sea turtle was rescued in Indian River County, off shore north of Wabasso on October 2, 2013, by a Disney Animal Programs employee. The loggerhead was transported to SeaWorld for rehabilitation. SeaWorld reported that, “This turtle was positively buoyant for the first few weeks and was lethargic. Otherwise it was in fairly good condition compared to some of the more severe cases that we have all seen. The treatment and recovery of this sea turtle included veterinarian check-ups, radiographs, medication to treat for infection, medication to treat for internal parasitic worms (which can overwhelm a compromised loggerhead sea turtle) and daily care from our dedicated team of sea turtle care experts.” Our thanks to all who played a part in this sea turtle’s rescue and recovery! Let’s all attend the release to show our support for this loggerhead and wish it a safe and healthy life!
