LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS Los Angeles Clippers Tommy Green – Mobile Beacon City Editor On April 26, 2014, Donald Sterling, owner of the Los Angeles Clippers was recorded while talking with his girlfriend, V. Stiviano. He was upset with her because she took a picture with Magic Johnson, former basketball player with the Los Angeles Lakers. You can access this information by going online and typing “Clippers owner Donald Sterling told girlfriend not to bring black people to game.” The article stated, “Donald Sterling said, “I don’t want you bringing black people to my team’s basketball games. You can sleep with them. You can bring them in. You can do whatever you want. Starling is recorded saying to Stiviano ; who ironically is African American and Mexican. Sterling’s ire was also directed at Magic Johnson who was seen posing with Stiviano in a photo on her Instagram. She told Sterling about the large number of Black players on his team. Sterling told her that he knows and who does she think was buying them food, clothes, homes, and cars?” I have been praying and hoping that something would shake rich African American entertainers to their core because they have been living a privileged existence. Many African Americans were upset, and I have been reflecting on what could have set them off. Even former basketball player Michael Jordan spoke out against Donald Sterling. Since playing in the National Basketball Association and retiring and becoming an owner, he hasn’t commented on any issue dealing with African Americans before. During the election in 2012 while states were erecting barriers to reduce the rights of African Americans to vote. The silence of sports figures have been deafening. I have come to the conclusion that they found out that they are no more respected than the brothers and sisters in the hood. The only difference is that they are rich, but they are still perceived as “Ns.” There is one thing that the upper class and rich African Americans hate with a vengeance is being equated with their Black brothers and sisters in the inner-city. In many instances, the Black sports figures at majority White colleges have been encouraged to not get involved in the struggle of the Black community. They have tried to discard anything that refers to their brothers and sisters. A large number of their girlfriends and wives are White. There is a certainty about evil. However, eventually, it will come knocking on your door. Now after these rich sports figures have done as much as possible to be accepted by White, now they are realizing that that they are thought of as just another “N.” When LeBron James departed the Cleveland Cavaliers, Dan Synder, the owner, made some disparaging comments about LeBron as though LeBron owed him unlimited appreciation for playing with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Rev. Jessie Jackson said, “Dan Synder was treating LeBron as though he was a slave. There was an outcry from African American sport figures active and retired who spoke up saying that the action of Dan Synder didn’t reflect how slaves were treated. One in particular was Michael Smith, ESPN Commentator. One sport figure that will speak out is LeBron James. Duane Wade and LeBron wore a hood on their heads to show support for Trayvon Martin when he was killed, but Duane and LeBron are the only sport figure who have become involved. On April 27, 2014, on TNT NBA game, Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley and Kinney Smith were discussing Donald Sterling. Kenney was forceful in what he thought should happen to Donald Sterling. Charles was hesitant at first until Kenney challenged his thinking, then Charles became more pronounced about Donald Sterling. I don’t know what has happened to Shaquille. He didn’t speak up with force in what the NBA Commissioner had done. In most instances, he doesn’t make any sense in what he says. Shaq has been acting like a buffoon and dancing a lot of the time. On April 30, 2014, Roland Martin, NewsOne News, said, “Chris Webber, TNT, basketball announcer, said, the basketball players need to establish a movement for gaining power.” “THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!”
