LUTHER: ST. THOMAS AQUINAS MAY VERY WELL BE DAMNED Here is an example of outrageous statements that are the very *opposite* of those that I am collecting for my upcoming ecumenical book, The Catholic Luther. * * * * * My advice has been that a young man avoid scholastic philosophy and theology like the very death of his soul. . . . I have the strongest doubts as to whether Thomas Aquinas is among the damned or the blessed. . . . Thomas wrote a great deal of heresy, and is responsible for the reign of Aristotle, the destroyer of godly doctrine. (Against Latomus, 1521, tr. George Lindbeck, Luthers Works, vol. 32, p. 258) For more errors of Luther, see my earlier book about him: socrates58.blogspot/2008/04/books-by-dave-armstrong-martin-luther.html I detail many more also on my Luther web page: socrates58.blogspot/2006/11/luther-lutheranism-index-page.html Im much more charitable to Luther as a Catholic, than he is to Aquinas as a Lutheran. In one of my fictional dialogues, I presuppose that he is in heaven, though after a very long spell in purgatory. :-)
