Laikipia Central has been earmarked as an area that will get special attention during Laikipias Ivory belongs to elephants walk set to kick off on the first of July. During the second round of the Walks planning meeting held at the county government’s annex offices in Nanyuki, the organizing committee passed, there will be long stop overs at Ngare Ngiro,Solio and Matanya trading centres in Laikipia central, which are known to be the hideouts for poachers. During the stopovers the Elephant Neighbours Centre team (the organization behind the walk) will meet with the communities living in the trading centers and educate them more on the negative effects of poaching to the economy of Laikipia county. On Feb 12th two suspected poachers shot and killed by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) rangers at the Rhino Sanctuary in Solio Ranch, later in the year on May 26th one rhino was lost to poachers in the same ranch.
