Land dispute threatens peace in Maseka By Samuel Ben Turay form Magburaka A land dispute has ensued in the village of Maseka, Konika chiefdom, Tonkolili district, between members of the Komeh family and their paternal cousins. According to Joseph Bomo Komeh, the land belongs to the Komeh, although some distant relatives have been using it to cultivate rice. He said they have decided to take full possession of the land, but reports indicate that their cousins are reluctant to cede the land to them. “The land belongs to the Komeh family and no other surname has the power to cultivate there anymore without my approval,” he said, albeit conceding that, “My late father, Pa Komeh, gave this land to one of his sisters who has died. If her children, who are not Komehs, want to use the land they must request for it.” However, Osman Kamara, who is cousin to the Komehs, said his family has been working on the disputed land for years, after it was granted to his grandmother. “We really want unity in this village and not violence. This land was owned by my late grandmother, who was a Komeh; the only thing is that she got married to another family, which is why some of us carry different surnames,” he said. Section chief of Maseka, Pa Karr Sesay, confirmed that the matter is serious and that timely intervention is needed to address the issue.
