Last I meet this great soldier on 01 October at 1127 hours at Kurmitola International Airport in 1977, great flyer, Officer & Gentleman, a brave commander who were with his officers and men was doing negotiation with the Red Army of hijacking drama with a master plan to kill all Bangladesh armed forces officers. Before that for 4 days he was negotiating day and night and for the save passage of terrorist and safety of passengers under the direction/ instruction of General Zia personally I was the Chief Duty Signal Officer of AHQ and Officer commanding Shere Bangla Nagar Static Signal company in addition to my duty I was also performing Acting 2nd in command of Static Signal Regiment due to illness of of our 2nd in Command who was admitted in CMH Dhaka. Providing fixed communication network for operation was my responsibilities and I was shuttling between AHQ and Airport. That bloody night I fought for my life, My commanding officers Lt. Col. Salimuddin Muhammad Shariar fought for his life and our comrade bother officers of our regiment Major Jahangir ( now living in Denmark) Capt. Sabur ( Retired as Major), Lt Mubashi (Retd as Lt. Col) Lt Shafique ( retired as Maj General ) bravery, dedication and standing as fearless dedicated Gazis saved the country from a total destruction. All could be dead then but as said soldiers lie by chance. I can only say the JCOs NCOs and other ranks of Signal center stood bedside me like a mount Everest and let the command network survive. Thy were the real patriot , freedom fighters brought independence and they kept it. Today I meet AVM AG Mahmud in a family function after 37 years. Saw him, my head bow down with respect, such great human I am lucky to meet again. remembered those moments of life and felt proud that I am so lucky to meet such great people again who scarified every thing for this country. Talking about his book he felt very happy and said, many thing I did not want to write which could make people small. He is such a dignified gentleman, never wanted to make any one small in life. His praise for his Grp. Capt. Saiful Azam, Air Cdr. MM Alam and his other fellow brother officers talks about his greatness. Time passed very fast with him, He wanted to meet again. I am with dignity , always smartly dressed and today also he was most dignified dressed person. Air Vice Marshal A G Mahmud being Air Chief he knew what was his responsibilities at that time. He made sure safety of all passenger was ensured and Aircraft was leaving for Libya. Never slept for a moments and hardly took any food. By this time we could feel with Bogra killing and all movement in Dhaka some thing was coming. He was waiting for a message from President but this message never arrived but what arrived were the killers over 47 Air force officers and many Army officers were killed. It was a hand to hand fight none gave up and how you managed to save his life. “My Destiny” is not simply the autobiography of Air Vice Marshal A.G. Mahmud.
