Last Night I was lucky enough to see SLAMS "RENT", upon arrival I was interested to see how they would pull off this show in such an intimate venue however I was delighted at how well they used the space to its fullest.Mark was superbly played by Tyler Hess would commanded the stage and took Mark from narrator to an unnerved bystander in support group and beyond, well cast I was at ease with his portrayal of Mark and warmed to him quickly.Maverick De leon played the sad Roger still in morning over the loss of his girlfriend April to AIDS well, with Mimi played by Guada Banez and Aids looming over them both they played the tragic couple tangled in love and fate with great enthusiasm. Collins played by Jenter Zilm gave the role a ever so slight touch of bashful shyness when it came to falling for Angel which was so believable natural and beautiful to watch their love develop through the storyline then to have them ripped apart in death which had me blubbering my heart out.I was so engaged by Angel and his death scene, Just Awesome. I like when I see a musical to be taken on a ride of roller coaster highs and lows RENT has this and this production didnt disappoint. Maureen was played by Gemma Purdy who took the mad performance artist to a hilarious level only to be put back in place by the commanding character of Joanne who played by Kristen Bourke was able to balance the couple to perfection "take me or leave me" has always been one of my favourite belty diva duo songs and I was ecstatic to give them the applause they deserved, such powerful voices.The Landlord Benny who redeemes himslef by covering Angels funeral was Aptly played by Drew Collet, Supported by an amazing ensemble cast with Amelia Hunter, Anthoney Julian, Emily Rose Carr, Emma Hall, Naomi Elias, Shane Hunt, Timothy Oon, Meriana Johnsen, and Sarah Kiely this show was well worth seeing. I believe they are sold out tonight for their final performance as last night was as well.
