Last night, I explored three American features, in the documentary Salesman (Albert Maysles, David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin, 1968; 8/10), Lars and the Real Girl (Craig Gillespie, 2007; 9/10) and my Curtain Call, as best film of the day, The Last Temptation of Christ (Martin Scorsese, 1988; 10/10), as well as the season two finale of Columbo, Double Shock (Robert Butler, 1973; 9/10) and an outstanding video by The Pharcyde: Drop (Spike Jonze, 1995; 10/10). Although I am a fan of each of their work, I had never seen better acting than in this nights viewing, from either Ryan Gosling, Willem Dafoe, David Bowie, Harvey Keitel, Emily Mortimer or Patricia Clarkson--they each did simply remarkable work in admittedly bizarre and compelling roles. The Peter Gabriel soundtrack for the Scorsese film is one of my favourites ever, almost as memorable as John Barrys for On Her Majestys Secret Service. My Five Stars, for cinematic brilliance, were: --Actor: Willem Dafoe (The Last Temptation of Christ) --Actress: Patricia Clarkson (Lars and the Real Girl) --Director: Martin Scorsese (The Last Temptation of Christ) --Cinematography: Michael Ballhaus (The Last Temptation of Christ) --Soundtrack: Peter Gabriel (The Last Temptation of Christ). Tonight: Probably The Candidate (Michael Ritchie, 1972), Band of Outsiders (Jean-Luc Godard, 1964) and Project Nim (James Marsh, 2011). Film Club! =)
