Last night we said good bye to board members White and Kennett and - TopicsExpress

Last night we said good bye to board members White and Kennett and wish them well in their future endeavors. A resolution in opposition to the prison being located in Jordan District was adopted and will be sent to the prison relocation committee. Enrollment numbers were discussed and as predicted enrollment was down. It was also discussed putting the year round schools ( Columbia, Hayden Peak, Riverton, Mountain Shadows, and Oquirrh) to a traditional schedule. This act times 5 schools will translate into a 500,000 dollar savings to the district per year. If this will effect your family and you prefer a year round school you may get a permit to one of our many year round schools. Two schools in Herriman will be surveyed to see if they want to go to traditional for about 2 years and then return to year round as needed. If you need help with finding a year round school near you or with the procedure just email me. No traditional schools will be going year round, and we are studying the Alpine model of early birds and later gators as a way to increase school capacity in a traditional schedule. No decision was made on this as it is still being studied. The policy AA419 dress code and student conduct was discussed and administration was given direction for desired changes. The changes include ensuring the dress policy is followed in the same manner at all of our schools. Basically the changes that will be made are just the language not the content. A pilot program for early retirement notification will be tried this year. This will be a scaled incentive with the earliest notification in January being $500.00 and dropping to $200.00. The reason to give a notification incentive is to allow our district to have an early opportunity to hire the best candidates to fill the vacancies. The board had asked for information on senior citizen discounts to school events, we were informed that anyone 62 or over can get into all sporting events for free. Theatre productions charge and this was not changed as the revenue is needed to help pay for the cost of putting on the productions, royalties can be very expensive. Next years calendar was approved and the following 2 years were approved with the understanding that they may be altered slightly. Teachers came to give the board input in regards to the calendars, I so appreciate hearing their thoughts before I vote. Only 1 purchase was made with your money last night and that was for colored paper, thank you for your financial support. The superintendent shared her report with data as to how our district is doing. Great news in that the graduation rate continues to rise and the dropout rate declines. Lastly we had a report on grant money the district received the last 2 years, for 2012-13 $749,752 and get this for 2013-14 $2,622,514 isnt that great news. A large amount of this years money is being used to offer an after school stem program with Lego robots at Oquirrh Hills, Joel P. and West Jordan Middle schools.
