Last week’s Racial Equity Convening was inspirational. Hundreds of people – from government, non-profits, advocacy groups, and philanthropy – came together to bring alignment to a shared vision for racial equity. The two-day Regional Convening on Race and Equity, which Mayor Chris Coleman and I co-hosted together with the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society, sought to increase understanding of and commitment to racial equity. We shared best practices, which was great. Even more significantly we expanded collaboration nationally and here in our region so we can move forward more quickly and with more power. Many of the discussions focused on how to have the hard conversations about race in the government and how to make it a movement and not simply a project. The convening allowed us to talk about deliberate steps along the way we can take that will move us toward racial equity. Many City of Minneapolis department heads and staff participated, in addition to my own staff, and I look forward to applying ideas and best practices to the racial equity action plan we’re developing. I am also excited at the new level of partnership we are forging regionally – between and among Minneapolis, Saint Paul, Hennepin and Ramsey Counties, our school districts and the Met Council. There is power in collective action and I am proud to be part of it. -kb
