Last year in a seminar about third world development, I made the argument that it can cost hundreds of pounds to ship books to those in need or, holding up my tablet device for emphasis, for hundreds of pounds we can have the potential for access to every piece of written information available to man. In some places in Africa technology has leapfrogged, where there is no reliable landline phone network, yet most farmers have access to smart-phones, used to access market prices and weather reports on the fly. The current system of aid is a tiny plaster over a gaping wound. If we were to give the technology which not only allows people to learn, but to continue to learn, to communicate, and even teach, then we may see a greater world for it. I hope to see this lantern developed to a point where its inclusion into every digital device becomes a global standard.
