Last year, the Newman Government awarded a Government contract for subsidised air routes throughout Far North Queensland to a NSW-based company - REX - rather than the Cairns-based company Skytrans, which had held the contract previously. The outcome of this Newman Government decision? Skytrans has now folded. A number of remote, isolated communities have been left without air transportation at the start of the wet season and, 200 jobs in regional Queensland have been lost. At the time, Transport Minister, Scott Emerson said the awarding of FNQ air routes to REX represented a great deal for regional Queensland and was a part of the LNP Governments plan for a brighter future. I suspect 200 regional Queensland workers who are now unemployed because of Mr Emerson and Mr Newmans decision might not see it the same way.
