Lately I have been seeing a disturbing trend on Facebook. I have seen several posts lately that are telling people that if they post such-and-such, the person will unfriend them. Well, here are my thoughts: I have you as a friend on FB because something brought us together. Dogs, work, maybe just the flow of life. If you post something upsetting or contrary to my views, I have the option of using the I dont want to see this button. And I do. Many of my FB friends have different views on politics, religion, social issues, heck - music! - than I do. And thats ok. I dont need people to walk in lock-step with me. Im a big girl, I can handle it. And I realize that in posting things that may seem distasteful or disturbing to me, you are trying to express something. This medium (FB) that we use is imperfect. It cannot show us the persons intent. Maybe they posted something because it was upsetting, shocking, funny, stupid-beyond-belief....and it came across wrong. I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt. And, yes, I sometimes use that no-see button for things that just make me want to cry. But we need awareness of some of the awful things out there, too. If it is something that I just cant bear to watch or that I think I can do nothing about, I no-see it. But sometimes, I pass things along because I feel it is something we need to be aware of in our own lives. Feel free to no-see it. But before you unfriend someone, stop and think. Is the value of that whole person so little that it isnt worth taking the time to no-see a few posts? And if the answer is yes, then go ahead and unfriend me. Ill miss you.
