Betty as her friends called was known as a stand up dame when that word had real reasonance. A life long Liberal she played it straight and called em like she saw em. As evidenced by her career threatening opposition to Joe Mc Carthy and the Hollywood Blacklist that ruined many a career and life. When warned at a Hollywood Party by Duke Wayne that her activities could be construed as anti-American , she laid him low asking if he was so pro American why did he sit WW2 out making movies in Hollywood while fellow movie stars like Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda enlisted and served. When a startled Duke complained Betty you dont understand Bacall shot back I understand you and what your saying and there both a bunch of hooey Now thats a dame
