Here is the invitation theyre sending: interfaith forum: Our Crucial Responses to the Prevalence of Corruption and Disasters 11 November 2013 Dear fellow advocates, Greetings of solidarity! The Philippines is undeniably vulnerable to extreme weather events due to climate change. We have seen the videos and photos of devastation wrought by super-typhoon Yolanda hitting Central and Eastern Visayas. In fact, the shocking experiences we had with super-typhoon Pablo are still fresh in our minds. The Filipino people’s vulnerability to disasters and the colossal devastation are irrefutably rooted in social conditions of poverty and inequality which are being exacerbated by anti-people and anti-environment policies and bureaucratic corruption of public funds. It is lamentable as public funds from the taxes we honestly paid, which are needed to make us resilient to climate change, have been lost to corrupt politicians and their cohorts through the pork barrel system while typhoon survivors are suffering from lack of food, water, shelter, healthcare and other necessities for survival. The Aquino government even justified the presidential pork and Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) as contingency fund for disaster. But, the massive devastation we have witnessed proved that such justification is unacceptable as those funds have been used for corruption. The greatest victims of corruption and disasters are the most vulnerable groups of the society such as the working people, women, children, and elderly. Hence, we have had enough of disasters and corruption. We must demand an end to government negligence and mismanagement; to continue to call for the abolition of pork barrel system and re-channel the budget for genuine relief and rehabilitation of disaster-affected areas and provision of basic services for the vulnerable sectors, the poor, women, children, and elderly; and to call for sound oversight of funds for typhoon survivors while, on the other hand, we are calling the people to mobilize resources and expertise for the typhoon survivors in dismal need. In this juncture, we are warmly inviting you to attend the INTERFAITH FORUM on Our Crucial Responses to the Prevalence of Corruption and Disasters on November 18, 2013, 1PM-5PM, at Molave Restaurant, Tagum City. This is now the apt time to level-up our anti-corruption campaign and solidarity for the survivors of calamities. We are looking forward to see you on the said forum. Thank you very much.
