Learning from the Very Best iPad, Android, PC, PDF At Harvard Business Review we know that ideas often have more infuence when they’re connected to intriguing people. Several of the articles in this issue highlight the thoughts and achievements of particularly noteworthy individuals. One of them is Alex Ferguson, whom many people consider the greatest coach in the history of sports. Sir Alex (he was knighted in 1999) managed the Manchester United football club for 26 seasons before retiring a few months ago. His article, cowritten with the Harvard Business School professor Anita Elberse, distills Ferguson’s approach into eight leadership lessons that are applicable to managers of many institutions—covering topics such as how to maintain control of a high-powered team, the underappreciated power of observation, and managing inevitable change. We also feature a piece by Hamdi Ulukaya, the lively founder and CEO of Chobani, which grew seemingly overnight into the best-selling yogurt brand in the United States. The Kurdish-born Ulukaya explains why entrepreneurs should think twice before accepting money from the private investors who inevitably come knocking once a promising new business takes of. He rejected several such overtures and feels his company is stronger as a result. Michael Porter, one of the world’s most respected thinkers in the felds of strategy and competition, teams up this month with the recently departed Partners HealthCare network president Thomas Lee to produce a practical and even optimistic piece on how to fx health care. Reform, the authors say, must be based on a new, overarching goal of improving patient outcomes while lowering costs. We hope these authors and their ideas inspire you this month.
