Learning to be kind in the face of hositility to avoid conflict is a way a lot of people are brought up. Unfortunately that sort of behaviour teaches abusive people to continue to behave poorly. Youre essentially rewarding these people for bad behaviour. This doesnt mean you should devolve into a being a nasty person however, anytime you encounter this it is important to remember that there is such thing as being too nice. When someone does something that bothers you, its important to take that immediate opportunity to tell them. Being kind is often just an excuse to avoid necessary conflict. You dont have to be a jerk, but you do have to confront the situation or risk encouraging the bad behaviour youre seeking to prevent. If the behaviours essentially place you in a dangerous situation remove yourself completely from being around that person. :)
