Left us on this day (Dec. 22) in 2012: US funk singer Marva Whitney (complications of pneumonia, age 68), considered by many funk enthusiasts to be one of the rawest & brassiest of music divas; she began her music career as a child, joining her family gospel group, The Manning Gospel Singers; she toured with James Brown in the late-60s, including a trip to perform for troops in Vietnam - James nicknamed her Soul Sister Number 1; her most well-known track, Unwind Yourself, was sampled many times, including by the 45 King, DJ Kool & Mac Miller; Public Enemy famously sampled her track Its My Thing for their 1988 Bring the Noise; she continued to tour relentlessly through 2009, especially in Europe & Japan where she maintained strong cult followings, until she collapsed on stage from a stroke in Dec. 2009 in front of thousands of fans in Lorne, Australia…
