Left us on this day (Oct. 4) in 2009: popular Argentine folk singer Mercedes Sosa (complications from recurrent endocrine & respiratory problems, age 74); known as La Negra (literally, The Black One), she was both revered & vilified (by those in power) for being a voice of conscience throughout Latin America (she was also nicknamed the voice of the voiceless ones); Mercedes was a pioneer of the nueva cancion movement of the 60s, which had much in common with the progressive & political protest folk music coming out of America at the time, & is considered a foundation for Latin music’s rock en espanol; in a career spanning four decades, she worked with performers across several generations & genres - folk, opera, pop & rock - including Andrea Bocelli, David Broza, Joan Baez, Francis Cabrel, Gal Costa, Nana Mouskouri, Holly Near, Milton Nascimento, Luciano Pavarotti, Shakira, Sting & Caetano Veloso; Mercedes was a three-time Latin Grammy winner in the category of Best Folk Album (including one posthumously) & served as an ambassador for UNICEF…
