Lesson 6 - A Fountain of Joy / The How-To’s of Beauty When I think about God’s beautiful woman and the abundant energy and obvious joy that distinguishes how she does her work, I want it! I want for myself that same kind of energy and joy when I approach the tasks at hand—and I’m sure you share my desire. Well, I’ve been experimenting over the years with what I call my “attitude helpers.” Besides helping me get more work done, they’ve helped me do my work with a willing, joyous heart. I hope these ideas help your fountain of joy bubble and flow! 1. Pray daily—Pray for those you serve and for yourself. Pray specifically about your attitude toward your work. Because God listens and responds, prayer changes things. Our Lord can turn your heart into a fountain of joy. In fact, prayer can give you the God-given perspective that lifts your duties in the home out of the physical realm and transports them to the spiritual realm (see Colossians 3:23 and number three below). 2. Recite Scripture—Make a list of verses right out of God’s Word that encourage you to be joyous in your work. My favorite is Psalm 118:24—“This is the day which the Lord has made; [I] will rejoice and be glad in it.” When we have verses like that in our heart and recite them as we work, we will find ourselves “rejoic[ing] in the Lord always” (Philippians 4:4)! 3. Do your work as unto the Lord—When things really seem unbearable and my perspective becomes skewed, another verse comes to my rescue. Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” I must remember that the What, the Who, and the Why of my work is God Himself! This reminder adds fresh joy to my empty heart. 4. Tackle your tasks—As you face each task, make the conscious choice to tackle it energetically, creatively, and joyfully. Energetically—Whatever chore you face, take on the challenge and “do it with all your might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10)! That’s how Nehemiah and the people approached the task of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 2)—with “a mind to work” (4:6)! They were on a mission! And so are you!
