Lest we forget the villages: In my late teens one statement that i never understood was "India lives in its villages". Thanks to a cross country rail journey which exposed me to real India in contrast to those I had learnt in my social studies text books. I saw lands stretching so vast that my eyes could not reach the other end, women carrying firewood on their heads, men working on the fields and herds of cattle grazing away. All these sights made me believe that I had gone down the timeline. Huts scattered across the vast plains with no sanitation facilities. I could hardly find electricity lines or transmission towers that imply that these people are still not aware of this most commonly used invention "electricity". They work day in and day out on their piece of land till the sun sets, fill their stomachs with whatever is left and find shelter to protect them from the nature. What about malls, movies, amusement parks, restaurants? Do any of these even convey any meaning to these Indians? On the other hand, are the urban youth hanging out in the burger shops and multiplexes aware of this section of our nation? Who will bring up the living condition of these millions? It’s high time each one of us asks ourselves what we can do. Need of the hour is a pinch of patriotism and empathy. Let us make this nation a better place for all those men whose hard work yields us food for life. Lest we forget that India lives in its villages.
