Letter of the week in the Australian today - future use for Collins subs. Those who bag the ASC fail to recognise the best of our Collins class subs is yet to come. When withdrawn from service and displayed at war memorials, they will make us feel pride at our naval prowess for years to come. Andrew Wyminga from TAS. Top image is a Collins and below is HMS Otway in Holbrook NSW. Andrew raises an interesting point about the future submarines. Clearly the Australian War Memorial should have some input into their design so that they can properly be displayed In parks etc 50 years from now. Perhaps the hull could be flat to make display and transportation on land easier. Either way a tough decision to be made as to whether Australia buys something already made or builds a new sub in Australia. Personally I think if they have problems manning the current subs how are they going to man 12 ?. Pay and allowances will have to be huge to attract the crews.
