Let’s Be Better Than This “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” --Martin Luther King I feel like I need to speak up. Two men with good reputations have been running for the state senate seat in LD25: Senator Bob Worsley and Ralph Heap. The race could have been a healthy discussion about public policy. Instead, it has been an ugly takedown attempt. Heap sent out an over-the-top letter this weekend repeating the already debunked claim that Senator Worsley “raised taxes,” and using tired hyperbole by painting Senator Worsley as an Obama disciple, among other things. Last night a robocall from an independent group supporting Heap called “The Alliance of Principled Conservatives” implied Senator Worsley was a criminal. A Heap family member funneled anonymously provided “research” riddled with inaccuracies and falsehoods to a blog that made completely untrue and defamatory claims about Senator Worsley. Senator Worsley addressed the claims and defended himself on his website. The Arizona Republic characterized the effort against Senator Worsley as “lining the streets of Mesa with lies.” I’m pleased that in contrast, Senator Bob Worsley has never attacked his opponent even once. Instead he has always responded with the grace, civility, and restraint becoming an elected official. Earlier in the campaign an independent group made an attack ad on Heap, and immediately Senator Worsley publicly condemned it in the newspaper and on his Facebook page. That group finally clued into their mistake and removed the ads from the air. That was the right thing to do. I appreciated Senator Worsley’s comments on this topic in his latest video with his final thoughts of the campaign. We will get the kind of politics we endorse through our votes.
