Let’s Take On the World’s Most Common Grassy Weed Poa Annual - TopicsExpress

Let’s Take On the World’s Most Common Grassy Weed Poa Annual Bluegrass is unique among weeds because it is the most common and widely distributed grassy weed in the world. Annual bluegrass is a winter annual that germinates in late summer to early fall, overwinters, and produces seed in the spring. Its most noxious habit is that it re-seeds itself prolifically. Its thick mat of bluegrass chokes out better turf underneath. Annual bluegrass greens up easily in winter and spring but when the hot weather comes, the bluegrass dies, leaving large bare spots and a legacy of thousands of seeds for next fall. Watering deeply and infrequently as well as mowing at three inches can help slow annual bluegrass down because it has very shallow roots and it is a very short grass. The only way to eliminate the weed is by spreading a pre-emergent in August or early September. One thing to be aware of is if you plan to over seed your lawn in September you cannot use a pre-emergent because it will prevent the grass seed from coming up as well.
