Life sometimes sucks at home when your family become deeply Japanised and your children have adapted the Japanese culture of no touch, no hug, notalk, and definitely dont talk to me when my friends are around! Being a foreign father is hard when your kids dont wanna talk to you because you cant speak their language and speaking English is embarrassing to them somehow! We get that nagging feeling that “doing this, here, was not what I was meant to be doing.” We get that nagging feeling that there’s somewhere else we should be. We dream of escaping constantly. Its really saddening when you are in the other room and you can hear your kids laughing and having fun with their mother speaking in their native tongue! A common complaint from foreign men is a lack of overt affection from their Japanese wives. It’s not just verbal affirmation some men hope for more of, either. Like most of Asia, Japan has very different standards about casual physical contact from many Western cultures, and one person’s casual flirting can be another’s violation of personal boundaries.
