Lilting is the age-old art of articulating dance tunes with the human voice; its unfortunately a dying art in Ireland but there are still some practitioners. I think Seamus Fay is the best lilter Ive ever heard - he knows jigs, reels, slip jigs and has an amazingly true sense of pitch. He grew up learning how to lilt from his mother and grandmother, who was well known for weddings during the 1930s. He says: Its hard to imagine now, but at that time musical instruments were hard to come by, so lilters were in demand, in the same way that DJs are today. -- Rhiannon
